Ai Weiwei's World MapPublished: 03 Sep 2009 14:02:01 PSTArtist Ai Weiwei will open his exhibition World Map in Beijing's 798 District at Faurschou Gallery on Friday.Ai's title work World Map consists of 2,000 layers of cotton neatly cut into the shape of a map of the world. Creating World Map took many hands – a very deliberate point Ai wanted to emphasize, referring to China's reputation for cheap labor in the clothing and textile industry.The exhibition also includes Ai's social sculpture Fairytale, conceived for Documenta Kassel 2007, where he took 1,001 Chinese nationals to the hometown of the Brothers Grimm.Commenting on the socio-political and economic climate of contemporary China, Ai uses metaphoric references, humor, pun and political irony to redefi ne and reconsider the meaning of traditions.Born in Beijing in 1957, Ai's father was famous Chinese poet Ai Qing. CITS to open branch in NingboPublished: 15 Mar 2009 23:46:07 PSTMar. 16, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China International Travel Service (CITS), a Chinese tourism conglomerate, has obtained the approval from the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) to open a branch in Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, sources reported.The new branch aims to explore the higher margin travel market in the city and to bring more foreign guests to local resorts through the company's experienced marketing and advanced network.The Ningbo branch will be the first travel agency under the CITS brand in the province. A representative from CITS said the move was motivated by the rapid economic development in the region. Ningbo City is gradually becoming involved in the Yangtze River Delta Economic Travel Zone, he added.So far, CITS has established 20 holding subsidiaries and over 122 agencies in China and it has 14 overseas branches. China Telecom net profit slumps 96.3% in 2008Published: 24 Mar 2009 18:24:51 PSTMar. 25, 2009 (China Knowledge) - China Telecom Corp Ltd<728><CHA>, the nation's largest fixed-line operator, Tuesday posted a net profit of RMB 884 million for 2008, representing a year-on-year decline of 96.3% from RMB 24.2 billion in 2007, mainly dragged by provisions it made for the Little Smart businesses, a low-end wireless service, which is set to retire by 2011.The company said that the significant loss came after the RMB 24-billion impairment charges on the Little Smart limited-range wireless service. Official statistics showed that the number of the Little Smart subscribers was 69.83 million by the end of 2008 as compared to 84.54 million in the previous year and 100 million about three years ago.In the meantime, the fixed-line users dropped 5.6% year on year to 208 million last year, said the company.The company also said that it suffered a net loss of RMB 16.4 billion for the fourth quarter. Last year, China Telecom acquired China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd's<600050><762><CHU> CDMA businesses for more than RMB 40 billion.
